In this unique study abroad opportunity, students will receive training and experience in two areas:
1. The practice of design with international collaborators in international environments
2. Conducting design for global markets
In addition, students will learn to function in cross-cultural engineering design teams, partnering with students from the US, Spain and other global institutions. This study abroad program takes place at Tecnun (Universidad de Navarra) over a 2-week period at the end of May. This is an ideal program for Penn State Engineering students as it allows students the opportunity to participate in a study abroad program while still having time to complete a summer engineering internship!
As part of this program, students will participate in a course that examines engineering design from a global perspective through hands-on design activities, engagement with industry partners and a 2-week design project. Through the course, students will learn to identify global engineering design problems, develop effective solutions within a cultural context, evaluate their designs with global parameters and effectively communicate their designs. The culmination of the course is a final project where the results are presented in oral reports as well as detailed prototypes. Student evaluations in the course will be based upon the quality of oral reports, prototypes, and team performance.
Students will have the opportunity to visit the design studios and manufacturing operations of Spanish companies like Orbea to learn how the principles taught in class are practiced in industry. Students will also experience many cultural activities, such as surfing in the Bay of Biscay or visiting the Guggenheim Museum in Bilboa, Spain.
Summer: May 17 - May 30, 2020

30 - 89 Days Prior to Departure: 50% Program Fee + EA Admin Fee
29 Days - Departure Date: 100% Program Fee + EA Admin Fee
Following the start of the summer semester, any adjustment of tuition charges will be made according to the Tuition Adjustment Schedule as determined by the Office of the Bursar. More information can be found on the University Senate Policy on Withdrawal and Leave of Absence.
