Program Description:

Program Overview

This interdisciplinary course provides students in fields like business, economics, pre-law, public policy, and engineering with real-world experience of the political, economic, and social impacts of Brexit on the UK as a whole with special attention paid to Northern Ireland. With the recent official departure from the EU this January, there are many questions that have yet to be answered regarding the post-Brexit life in the UK. This major world event is creating many challenges for leaders of industry, education, political organizations, and everyday citizens. Students will have the opportunity to interact with people who are dealing with those new challenges.

Complicating matters with regard to the UK's departure from the EU is the subject of the Northern Ireland border. Many years of the "Troubles" has caused many to be sensitive to avoid decisions that could conceivably create a return to the past. How will the new Withdrawal Agreement be implemented in a way that satisfies both the English and the Northern Irish? How do they move forward? Students will spend time in Belfast--miles away from the new border with the EU--to learn about just this subject.

Studying Abroad with a Disability

Many students with disabilities successfully study abroad each year. Please note that other cultures may have different attitudes and available accommodations regarding disabilities. While we cannot guarantee the accessibility of all program sites and locations, specific accommodations may be arranged in consultation with our office, the Student Disability Resources office, and our partners abroad. To prepare for success, students are strongly encouraged to research the country and program location to consider if and how they will manage their disabilities abroad in advance of selecting a program. Students with disabilities and other diverse backgrounds can begin their research on our Diversity Awareness Abroad page.
