If you enjoy writing to express yourself creatively - you will be at home in this course. You will also be at home here if you are an avid reader of fiction, poetry, and nonfiction, but have never tried your hand at writing it. In ENGL 50 you will explore the genres of nonfiction, fiction, and poetry by reading published essays, short stories, and poems and by writing personal essays, sketches, scenes, and poems. We'll discuss the relationship between the genres and also discuss what makes each a distinct art form.
We will travel to Ireland to explore history and culture and will be developing our writings based on our experiences abroad. All assignments will tie back to our study abroad travel. The first third of the course will provide a foundation, then we will travel, and the final third will be devoted to developing and revising our creative work. You'll hand in regular writing assignments in addition to completing longer writing projects. You'll share some of your creative work to discuss in class.
During the embedded travel component, housing will consist of hotel/hostel accommodations.
The process for enrolling in an embedded course varies according to the instructor and/or department. The program leader has indicated that in order to enroll in the course and travel component, students must attend information sessions or have an office appointment with either of the co-leaders prior to being added to the class. This is to ensure that students understand conduct expectations, GPA requirement, and the expenses of the travel prior to enrollment. Students will need to place a travel deposit in order to hold a place in the course.
