This interdisciplinary course provides students in fields like business, economics, pre-law, public policy, and engineering with real-world experience of the political, economic, and social impacts of the European Union (EU), through two case studies: Great Britain and Ukraine.
Great Britain's decision to leave the EU (Brexit) is unprecedented in the history of the EU. This messy divorce has implications politically and globally.
On the other hand, Ukraine aspires to closer relations with the EU. The new Association Agreement between Ukraine and the EU has come at a high price for Ukraine, and the EU continues to put pressure on Ukraine for faster and more radical reform.
The two cases provide contrasting, yet complementary, views of the power of the European Union to influence domestic politics, economics, and the societies of European countries. The goal of the course is to provide students with a nuanced understanding of the EU's institutions and their importance.
During the embedded travel component, housing will consist of overnight accommodation at hotel, hostel, or student dormitory/residence.
The process for enrolling in an embedded course varies according to the instructor and/or department. In order to enroll in the course and travel component, students must participate in an interview with the program leader(s).
