The University of Sussex is located only a few miles from Brighton, a lively seaside resort on the south coast of England. London is only an hour away by train, and from Gatwick airport or the nearby channel ports, it is just a short journey to the rest of Europe. Though relatively small, Brighton is surprisingly cosmopolitan and has often been dubbed "London-By-The-Sea." There is plenty to do in and around the town, with a variety of shopping centers, markets, and cafés.
Founded in 1961, the University of Sussex is a relatively new university with an international reputation for the quality of its research and for innovative and effective teaching styles and methods. Sussex differs from most universities in that it is organized by schools (rather than departments of study) that bring together a number of related subject areas.
This institution offers a large selection of courses, with strengths in anthropology, art history, biology, chemistry, computer science, economics, English language and literature, environmental science, history, international relations, math, media studies, physics, political studies, psychology, and sociology. You will take regular courses with local students at this institution. For more information about the range of courses on this program, please visit the Sussex website.
You will receive credit for all academic courses taken at this institution, and all of your grades from abroad will count toward your Penn State cumulative GPA. You may not take any courses overseas on a Pass/Fail basis.
Course registration for this institution is on-line so you can register for classes prior to arrival, although any problems with on-line registration-if relevant-would have to be handled after arrival on-site. You may enroll in any courses for which space is available and for which you meet the host institution's requirements or prerequisites. You must take what the host institution considers to be a full-time load (generally, the equivalent of 12-15 Penn State credits). A full time credit load at University of Sussex is 60 credits.
