Program Overview

This course is part of an initiative to help develop viable economic and youth development options for the Children and Youth Empowerment Centre (CYEC) in Nyeri, an organization serving former street-dwelling children in Kenya. Students will learn about cultural, economic and social conditions in Kenya in order to contextualize experiences of the youth. Students will build on this knowledge by forming project teams to identify and develop options for youth development and enterprise development (including agricultural production and value addition), culminating with on-site assessment and implementation in Kenya. Through this course, students and faculty will partner with staff and youth at the CYEC to address a mutually-agreed upon agenda. Students will help formulate research questions, identify resources and develop possible solutions.

Studying Abroad with a Disability

Many students with disabilities successfully study abroad each year. Please note that other cultures may have different attitudes and available accommodations regarding disabilities. While we cannot guarantee the accessibility of all program sites and locations, specific accommodations may be arranged in consultation with our office, the Student Disability Resources office, and our partners abroad. To prepare for success, students are strongly encouraged to research the country and program location to consider if and how they will manage their disabilities abroad in advance of selecting a program. Students with disabilities and other diverse backgrounds can begin their research on our Diversity Awareness Abroad page.
