Program Overview     


The Intercollegiate Center for Classical Studies in Rome (ICCS) was established in 1965 by representatives of ten American colleges and universities; the number of member institutions has now grown to over 100. It provides undergraduate students with an opportunity in Rome to study ancient history, archaeology, Greek and Latin literature, Italian language, and ancient art. 

A Managing Committee elected by the consortium colleges and universities determines the curriculum and selects the faculty, students, and scholarship recipients. The Managing Committee has arranged for administration of the Intercollegiate Center to be handled by Duke University's Global Education Office for Undergraduates.

Education Abroad Credits


You will receive credit for all academic courses taken at this institution, and all of your grades from abroad will count toward your Penn State cumulative GPA. You may not take any courses overseas on a Pass/Fail basis. Students may not take sport or physical activity courses (e.g. sailing, bowling, yoga, etc.) abroad. These courses will not be credited at Penn State.Rome, Forum by Prof. Fagan

All students participating in this program are expected to enroll in the equivalent of at least 15 Penn State credits.

To see what kind of credit students in past semesters have received for courses taken on this program, visit the ICCS Rome course equivalency list (coming soon).  Keep in mind you will need to complete the course equivalency process once you have been accepted to your program and after you have completed your registration abroad. To obtain specific instructions on this process visit our Course Equivalencies page. The curriculum is structured differently from that in many American colleges and universities. Students are expected to take four courses; a few students take five courses. A major part of the academic work is a required comprehensive and integrated course called The Ancient City.  It is a course which requires as much class and study time as two semester courses. It covers Roman archaeology and topography, aspects of social and urban history of Rome, and Roman civilization. Frequent site visits and explorations, intensive museum tours and lectures, and wider-ranging trips based on the Professor-in-Charge's area's of expertise outside Rome are included as part of the course. In the recent past, Campania and Sicily have been the focus of extended and focused study. Because The Ancient City course depends on prior knowledge of Roman history, students are expected to prepare themselves by taking a Roman history course or by careful reading on the subject.


Pre-requisites


All applicants should be majors in classical studies, history, art history, archaeology or a related field.  Preference for admission is given to students with previous experience with Greek or Latin language instruction.


Housing and Meals


Your housing will be arranged by ICCS. You will live at the center, where weekday meals are provided.

These budget sheets include information on costs that are billable to the bursar bill, as well as estimated additional costs. Costs vary by program, so it is important to review this information carefully. Since students can enroll in varying amounts of credits on this program, the summer tuition rates vary according to the number of credits taken.


Please note that tuition rates may vary depending on major and class standing.

 

Financial Aid & Scholarships


Penn State students studying through Education Abroad can use most components of their existing financial aid packages toward the cost of study abroad. This may include federal and state grants, VA educational benefits, federal student loans, and University scholarships and grants. Notable exceptions include work-study awards and some athletic scholarships.

The University Office of Global Programs also administers a number of grants and scholarships. Eligibility is based on academic excellence and/or financial need. There is also funding available for study abroad programs in diverse locations and for students from diverse backgrounds. In most cases, applicants should have a current year FAFSA on file with the Office of Student Aid. Funding opportunities may also be available through Penn State academic departments. For detailed information on financial aid and scholarship opportunities and application procedures, please visit the Funding Study Abroad section of the Global Penn State website.

Students in the College of the Liberal Arts may be eligible for enrichment funding through the college. Please see the "funding study abroad" page and/or "easy guide to scholarships."

Students accepted to this program who are majoring or minoring in Classics and Ancient Mediterranean Studies are eligible to apply to the Department of CAMS for travel subventions. Contact the Head of the Department of CAMS.
